Digital Potentiometers adjust and trim electronic circuits that can be used to calibrate system errors and dynamically control system parameters.

The digital potentiometer can be electronically programmed, and non-volatile memory retains the wiper settings when power is turned off. Because a resistor ladder is built on a single chip (substrate), it also has the advantage of having the same relative accuracy as a D/A converter. The fuse link unit also features one-time programmability.

There are two types of digital potentiometers: volatile and non-volatile.
Volatile devices consist of resistors or resistors arrays. It also contains electronic circuit elements such as switches, logic gates, multiplexers, and data converters.
Non-volatile devices containmemory in the form of one-time programmable memory. Digital potentiometers can calibrate system tolerances and dynamically control system parameters. A non-volatile storage device retains wiper settings from power-off to power-on cycles.

Digital potentiometers can be used as variable low-pass filters, programmable gainamplifiers, programmable oscillators, voltage-to-current converters, and programmable rise/fall time waveform controllers. It can also be used for precise calibration of set point thresholds, sensor trimming, LCD bias trimming, audio attenuation, adjustable power supplies, motor control overcurrent trip settings, and offset trimming.
